Saul Tave’s Story

“Even my wife’s voice became painful to me,” said Tave. “I found myself asking her to “shoosh” frequently. That’s not good for a marriage! We’ve been married almost 52 years and want to keep going. It was my wife who prompted me to seek help.”

For Saul Tave of Largo, FL, hyperacusis andtinnitus symptoms developed slowly over a year.

“I’m a retired real estate broker. I have long done woodworking as I hobby and since I retired, I often work as a handyman,” says Tave. “Many of the tools in my shop as well as those I use for handyman work make loud and high-pitched noise. I did not bother with ear protection, which might have been a cause of my problems.”

The symptom Tave first noticed was his sensitivity to sounds – hyperacusis. It was not the normal, everyday sounds that were painful, but rather anything above those levels, he says. “For example, when someone would exclaim about something, it would be louder and at a higher pitch. That is what was painful.” Also, amplified sounds, such as those at a show or performance, would be painful.

The tinnitus was there too, but he found those symptoms more annoying and uncomfortable rather than disruptive. His primary care physician told him there was nothing he could do but just “live with it.”

“Even my wife’s voice became painful to me,” said Tave. “I found myself asking her to “shoosh” frequently. That’s not good for a marriage! We’ve been married almost 52 years and want to keep going. It was my wife who prompted me to seek help.”

Tave scheduled an appointment with an ear, nose and throat physician (ENT), who happened to have an audiologist on staff. The audiologist immediately diagnosed the hyperacusis, and because the ENT was familiar with local audiologist Patricia Harrington, Au.D., suggested that Tave seek her out.

Harrington’s initial diagnosis mirrored that of the audiologist at the ENT’s office. She determined that the Neuromonics Sanctuary™ could be an excellent fit for Tave, so gave him one of the devices to try out for the weekend.

The results were immediate. “Then, within two to three weeks, I had no pain,” exclaims Tave. “I enjoy the sound of my wife’s voice again.”
And while his tinnitus was not interfering with his life, Tave notes that he enjoys several hours every day where he no longer hears the ringing.
“To me, the Sanctuary is a miracle machine.”
